St. Mary Fifth Graders Bring the United States to Life Through Regions Project

On Tuesday, May 19, fifth graders from St. Mary Catholic Community School impressed all who visited with displays from sea to shining sea! The Regions Project was a big hit in its inaugural year. Creativity abounded as students served as tour guides through each of the five regions of the United States. Included in each presentation was information about each region’s culture, resources, climate, National Parks, landmarks, and history. Relief maps were also created to showcase geographical and political features. Students from throughout the school were welcomed into the regions during the day, while family and friends were invited to attend the evening event.

Throughout the school year, Mrs. Arianne Wong teaches United States history in her classroom while also placing a strong emphasis on geography. The Regions Project served as the culmination of a yearlong collaborative effort among groups of five or six students. The project also provided students with an opportunity to showcase their creativity by sharing information—and regional food samples!—in a casual, fun atmosphere while dressed in region-themed attire.

Mrs. Wong was very pleased with the students’ work. She commented, “I didn’t know what to expect and went into the day wondering if my vision would come to fruition. After seeing what the students had created, I can positively say it was all I had envisioned! Everywhere I turned, I was impressed with what was done! What a great event the students put on for the St. Mary School community, and what a great way to end our year of studies!”
