St. Mary’s students from Mrs. Magallon’s and Mrs. Wysocki’s 2nd grade class studied “Dia De Los Muertos” which, in Spanish, means “Day of the Dead.” Parts of Mexico and in more and more of the United States, people celebrate this unique holiday on November 1st and 2nd. The first day is to honor children and the second day is to honor adults who have passed away. One of the many traditions of this holiday is to create an altar to honor their deceased loved ones. The second graders made their own unique altars! Students laid out offerings (ofrendas) on the altars for their deceased ones. As students worked on completing this project they took the time to reminisce on all the good things they remembered about their deceased loved ones through pictures, memories, and objects with stories behind them. The culminating experience was watching Disney’s Coco, which takes students on a journey with the character Miguel and his ancestors on Dia De Los Muertos Day! “St. Mary’s Latino population has grown to over 20%, but ALL students learned and seemed to enjoy this hands-on cultural experience that allowed them to honor their loved ones,” said St. Mary’s principal, Tom Ruiz.
