St. Mary's 8th Graders Explore Our Nation's Capital

For over 30 years, the 8th graders at St. Mary Catholic Community School in Crown Point have taken a class trip to Washington, DC. Taking place in late September, this four day three night adventure trip allows students to see all the traditional monuments and memorials in our nation’s capital.

Other highlights of the trip include a visit to George Washington’s estate at Mt. Vernon, a dinner-dance cruise boat ride down the Potomac River, a tour of the National Shrine of the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception (the second largest church in North America), a visit to the Smithsonian museums, a stop at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, a ranger chat at Ford’s Theater, and tour of the U.S. Capitol building.

One of the annual trip highlights includes a visit to Arlington National Cemetery where four students are able to participate in a wreath laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. This year, the 8th grade class nominated Mika Santos, Elizabeth Wong, Mikey Evenson and Logan Hamnik to represent the class.

The students love the annual trip because it allows them to bond with their friends, learn about the U.S. government, and develop a deeper appreciation for our nation and its rich history.

Mikey Evenson, Elizabeth Wong, Logan Hamnik, and Mika Santos were nominated by their classmates to represent the school and lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery.
