The 5th grade students at St. Mary Catholic Community School in Crown Point recently graduated from the DARE program. DARE, which is taught by Crown Point Police Officer Stanko Gligic, is a 10-week program which teaches students the importance of saying no to drugs and alcohol, recognizing the signs of bullying, and teaches important ways to make good decisions. It also teaches students the importance of being a good citizen and how to be a positive role model for others.
The culminating activity of the program, students are asked to write a reflection essay about their experience. At graduation, four students are selected to read their essays. This year, Liam Becich, Je’Nylah Burley, Bryce Moss, and Tiahna Rodney were chosen. Two fifth graders, Sophia Olis and Flint Stompor said, “We learned how to make informed decisions and how harmful the ingredients in cigarettes can be.” Overall, all students took away a valuable lesson from the DARE program. “I learned to be an upstander (stand up for someone who is being bullied) and not a bystander,” said St. Mary’s, Chloe Ford.
