Community Helper week came to life for the Pre-K classes at St. Mary Catholic Community School in Crown Point. They had a special visit from the Cedar Lake Police Department. Officer Huppenthal, a St. Mary’s dad, along with Officer Tomko came to talk to the children about the many ways police officers keep our community safe, and how children can help keep themselves safe by following safety rules! The students were especially excited and surprised to meet K-9 Officer Johnny! Children were able to pet Officer Johnny, ask questions about being a police officer, and take an up close look and inspect the inside of a police car. Our afternoon classes had a special visit from Firefighter Mancera, also a St. Mary’s dad. Firefighter Mancera is with the Valparaiso Fire Department. Children were able to see the special gear firefighters need to wear to protect their body during a fire. They also practiced how to stop, drop, cover their eyes and roll! “We are so thankful for our Community Helpers!” said St. Mary’s Preschool lead teacher, Mrs. Alison Huffman.
