On Saturday, March 1, 2025, Ivy Tech Community College's Lafayette campus hosted the annual Science Olympiad Regional Competition, bringing together middle and high school teams from across the region to compete in a series of STEM-related events. The competition featured teams showcasing their knowledge and skills in various scientific disciplines.
Throughout the day, students participated in events ranging from anatomy and physiology to engineering challenges. Each event tested the teams' problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and scientific understanding. The competition aimed to inspire a passion for science and technology among students, encouraging them to pursue careers in these fields.
Students from St. Mary medaled in 22 out of the twenty-three events with an impressive seven first place medals, eight second place medals, and four third place medals. Seventh grader Sean Johansson has really worked to improve his performance in Road Scholar, an event dedicated to map reading. “Although, Road Scholar was challenging, it made it even better when Tommy and I got first place!” First year competitors Nick Mumaugh and Connor Bronson used notes from their previous invitational to refine their air trajectory project. They were rewarded with a first place finish. “All of the students worked very hard,” said one of the teams moderators, Mrs. Theresa McLoughlin.
St. Mary’s students placed first overall and will advance to the state competition on Saturday, April 5, 2025 at Purdue Northwest. The state tournament will bring together the best teams from across Indiana to compete for the chance to represent the state at the national level.
