St. Mary Catholic Community School’s Science Olympiad Team showcased their exceptional talent and dedication this past Saturday, earning a coveted top 10 finish (tops amongst diocesan schools) at the Taft Middle School Invitational. Competing against some of the region's most accomplished teams, St. Mary solidified its reputation as a rising force in the competitive world of science education.
The Taft Invitational, held at Taft Middle School, brought together over twenty teams from across Indiana and the Chicago suburbs. St. Mary’s students participated in a variety of challenging events spanning disciplines such as biology, chemistry, engineering, and physics. Their top-tier performance reflects months of rigorous preparation, teamwork, and academic excellence. “We couldn’t be prouder of our students and their commitment to both learning and collaboration,” said Theresa McLoughlin, the team’s head coach. “This strong performance from our little team is a testament to their hard work and the support of our school community.”
Highlighting the team’s success were standout performances in events such as Dynamic Planet, where seventh graders Luca Trajkovski and Sean Johannson took home a first place ribbon, Mission Possible where eighth graders Sara Cooley and Sophia Scalzetti earned third place, and Potions and Poisons, where Kailana Urbanek and Luca Trajkovski achieved third place. These accomplishments not only contributed significantly to the team’s overall ranking but also underscored the students’ versatility and depth of knowledge.
St. Mary Science Olympiad’s achievements at the Taft Invitational mark another milestone in their journey, as they now turn their focus toward upcoming regional competition on March 2. With momentum on their side, the team aims to build on their success and continue pushing the boundaries of academic excellence.
