The sixth-grade students at St. Mary Catholic Community School in Crown Point recently completed an exciting hands-on project centered around building gingerbread houses using their descriptive writing strategies. Each student individually took on the role of a realtor. The students then had to write a paragraph encouraging potential buyers to purchase their gingerbread house. They were required to turn their boring sentences into detailed descriptions. Once the writing was completed, they created flyers with illustrations, advertising their gingerbread house for sale. Lastly, the students created a physical model of their house using graham crackers, holiday candies, icing, etc. Despite rising interest rates and the slowdown in the housing market, this project was a wonderful way to foster their creativity and writing skills while still having some fun!
