The 5th grade students from St. Mary Catholic Community School in Crown Point recently visited Camp Tecumseh in Brookston, Indiana. The students participated in the Foundations For Success program, which focuses on the 5 pillars of: self-confidence, communication, leadership, trust, and problem solving. The students were placed into groups and were tasked with applying these pillars to nature related activities. Some of these activities included: building a campfire, shelter building, reading a map while navigating the nature trails, rock climbing, and completing the team obstacle course.
At the culmination of each activity, students were asked to reflect and journal how they can incorporate these five pillars into their daily schooling and lives. Two fifth graders, Olivia Valdes and Haley Gibens said, “We can especially use the pillars of self-confidence and leadership by believing in ourselves and being a leader for others.” Overall, all the students worked together to successfully complete their tasks and create lasting memories. “My favorite activity was the rock-climbing wall because it taught me to be more confident with activities and I can take that confidence back into the classroom, “said student TJ Raggs.
