This past Friday night, St. Mary's fifth through eighth graders participated in the school’s annual “Wildcat 3 on 3” basketball tournament. The tourney was held at Andrean High School. “It is an opportunity for the students to play basketball in a fun environment similar to the old Gus Macker tournaments without coaches or referees. Kids aren’t used to this format, but that’s what makes it fun. They call their own fouls and violations and it’s a learning experience” said principal Tom Ruiz who started the tourney over a decade ago. Several St. Mary’s alumni who are now in high school showed up to help facilitate the games by keeping score, keeping time, and settling disputes between teams. A fun time was had by all! In the 5th/6th grade division the “Fantastic Four” took first place. In the 7th/8th grade division “Fab Four” took first place. The tourney was organized by physical education teacher, Mr. Tyler Jeeninga who had great support from the faculty and staff that came out to help.
