St. Mary's Chess Team Dominates State Tournament with Joseph Mullally Capturing Top Honors

St. Mary's School in Crown Point had fourteen state qualifiers participate in the Scholastic Chess of Indiana state finals on Saturday January 25th. Hundreds of the best student chess players from across the state gathered to compete. All fourteen students played a grueling day of six rounds of chess over eight hours. “The wildcat chess players all made the school proud with their perseverance and positive attitudes,” said club moderator, Dr. Lisa Mullally. Mariella Ables, Kai Newtoff, Kameron Williams, Ayumi Artis, Joey Shea, Gabe Rosado, and Nathan Ford all represented SMS after qualifying as among the top players in the regional competition earlier this month.

Notable performances by students finishing among the best in the state included James Wong who placed 30th in the Middle School JV division. Lukas Vicari was 22nd in the Elementary JV division. Jacob Abramowicz and Matteo Gutierrez dominated the third grade and under division finishing 15th and 11th place respectively. Top 10 finishers in the Middle School division were James Raggs who placed 10th, Andrew Myers who placed 6th, and Joseph Mullally who achieved the astounding feat of coming in first place!  “I’m so proud of all our chess qualifiers and top finishers. Joseph Mullally represented St. Mary’s School and the entire Region very well by bringing home the first place hardware! It doesn’t get any better than that!” said principal Tom Ruiz.
