Remembering Those We Love: St. Mary’s Second Graders Celebrate Día de los Muertos

Second-grade students at St. Mary Catholic Community School in Crown Point recently had the opportunity to celebrate Día de los Muertos, which translates to “Day of the Dead.” Día de los Muertos is a cherished Mexican tradition that honors and remembers loved ones who have passed away.

As part of this special project, students created their own ofrendas, or altars, decorated with colorful designs, photographs, and meaningful items. Through this hands-on activity, students learned about this beautiful cultural tradition while honoring the memories of loved ones with their families. From grandparents and uncles to beloved family pets, each student created an ofrenda filled with love, creativity, and special memories.

The school also extended this meaningful tradition to its faculty and staff, inviting them to contribute photographs and special mementos of loved ones who have passed away to a schoolwide display. This heartfelt project brought the St. Mary’s community together to honor, remember, and celebrate the lives of those who will always hold a special place in their hearts.

To conclude the project, students watched the Disney-Pixar movie Coco, which beautifully highlights the importance of family, remembering loved ones, and the rich Mexican traditions associated with Día de los Muertos.
