St. Mary’s Second Graders Learn Important Safety Tips

Second-graders from St. Mary’s in Crown Point recently enjoyed a hands-on visit to the Tri-Town Safety Village in Schererville, Indiana. Local police officers and firefighters guided students through three engaging safety lessons.

During the railroad safety lesson, an officer shared important safety information, and students practiced looking “left, right, left” before crossing the street to reach the train station. They also had the exciting opportunity to step inside a caboose that is more than 100 years old!

Students explored fire safety in the village’s practice house, where they identified potential fire hazards and practiced how to evacuate safely. They learned to roll out of bed, check the door for heat, and climb out of a ground-level window. The students also practiced crawling from an upstairs bedroom down a smoke-filled stairwell.

Officer Ashley of the Schererville Police Department led the final lesson, discussing important topics such as bicycle safety, stranger danger, bullying, internet safety, and car safety.

It was a wonderful, hands-on learning experience for St. Mary’s second graders and a memorable way to develop important safety skills that could last a lifetime!
