Students at St. Mary’s School in grades 3–8 recently participated in a unique ice skating experience that combined mentorship and community through the school’s revitalized Buddy Program. Grade-level pairings were established in the fall, bringing older students together with younger students.
The event gave the students the opportunity to strengthen relationships, practice leadership, and support one another in a fun, real-world setting. The trip was coordinated by the principal, Tom Ruiz and school counselor, Alex Wooden who organized logistics, scheduling, and supervision to ensure a safe experience for all students. Diane Bosse of the Crown Point Parks Department and her staff did a great job and showed the group wonderful hospitality at Bulldog Park.
A team of dedicated parent volunteers played a key role in the day’s success by helping supervise groups, manage transitions, and support students both on and off the ice. The teachers appreciated the event very much as it gave them a chance to allow their students to bond.
More than just a field trip, the experience reinforced connection, confidence, and school pride, leaving students with lasting memories and a strengthened sense of community.
